Golf Tournament

To all our 2008 Tournament Players and Helpers:
Finally, after 4 years of trying, we got it right – as far as the weather went anyway! While not a huge fundraiser for the Foundation, we hope this year’s event continued to be a “friend-raiser” that served to keep the needs of students, and potential scholarships in the minds of all UCA alumni and friends. Sincere thanks for your participation and support!
This year we had a final number of 106 players. Most courses require a field of 144 to maintain a full shotgun start like we have enjoyed. As a result of the lower participation this year, we paid for 130 players (the 144 required minus a 10% “grace factor”), which ate into our profits by nearly $2,000! With your continued support and personal friend-raising efforts I know we can raise these numbers to the full 144 players!
During the luncheon, we talked about continuing the alumni weekend tournament as more of a fun golf outing and trying out the Golf Marathon concept in the Fall as our fundraising effort. Many schools much smaller than UCA raise over $40-50 thousand each year using this concept with the services of a professional company, ProFund of the Pacific, located near Monterey Bay Academy, to help run the event.
When I spoke to the golfers that remained for the luncheon at CRGC this year lots of people said they would like to play in this event – but unfortunately there were NO hands from anyone interested in serving on a committee to work with ProFund staff. They require a minimum of 6 people from our group to give 2–3 hours a week for the 6 weeks of organization prior to this type of event. We need to demonstrate that level of support from other golfers, alumni, or friends of UCA if we are going to be able consider this type of event for the Fall. Please consider helping out!
We need an infusion of new leadership to help find ways to increase participation, re-evaluate how things are run, new courses to explore and other improvements that could bolster support. We are including a small form to solicit ideas for other courses, better ways to get out players, more people to help recruit team players, and just provide ANY comments you might have. Please either mail the form back to Debbie, email your comments to ucafoundation@hotmail.org, or post comments on our www.ucafoundation.org website (this will be set up within the next week or so). I will continue to support both financially and on a committee (and even play – bad though I was)… but it is time for new leadership!
I appreciate the long hours put in by Debbie and the continued support of Susan, Nancy, Tom, Jaclin, Diane and other Board members and friends who contributed trophies, sponsored holes and student teams. Thanks also to Cathy Simone for her great pictures. And … thanks to each of YOU!
